Welcome To The Globe Collector Website...

Welcome to The Globe Collector website, this website is dedicated to the long since closed Groves & Whitnall mineral water works from Salford in Manchester along with the Groves family history, founded by William Peer Grimble Groves, his eldest son, William Grimble Groves and his son's friend, Arthur William Whitnall, In 1885, a decision was made to enter into the mineral water business. This resulted in the formation of Leigh & Co, a subsidiary of wholly owned by Groves & Whitnall. The enterprising zeal which had set the brewery on the road to success was now focussed on the bottling trade.

The new company chose to order mainly light amber glass bottles, which were embossed with the Globe trade mark (the new works went by the name of Globe Works). Coloured glass bottles were more expensive to buy than the usual aqua glass variety, The founder William Peer Grimble Groves died on the June 24th 1927 aged 79 a very rich man leaving an estate valued at £514,746, that equates to £22 Million by today's standards, being a generous man he left a good deal to charities across the UK including the salvation army, RNLI, & the Dr Barnardos homes for children.

Groves & Whitnall Ltd, Regent Road Brewery, and Salford that was taken over by Greenall Whitley in 1961 and closed in March 1971. Greenall Whitley closed subsidiaries J P Simpkiss, Brierley Hill, in 1985, Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery Ltd, Wem, in 1988, Davenport’s Brewery, Bath Row, Birmingham, July 1989, and James Shipstone & Sons Ltd, Star Brewery, New Basford, in 1992.

The idea behind the creation of the globe collector website is to assemble & share as much information about Groves & Whitnall & Leigh & Co all on one website along with images of the bottles they used, hopefully with the help of collectors within the hobby this will become a resource for all things globe related, by clicking the links in the top right of the page you can visit parts of our website & hopefully gain more information regarding Salford's greatest mineral water works & the family behind it.

Where Is Salford...

Salford is about 200 miles north west of London. With excellent road and public transport links to all parts of the UK, the city is well placed as a visitor and commercial centre & Manchester International Airport, gateway to over 200 international destinations, is just a few miles away too. the city of Salford covers 37 square miles and the five districts of Salford, Eccles, Worsley, Irlam & Cadishead, and Swinton & Pendlebury. Some 220,000 people are proud to call Salford their home!

The Blackfriars, Broughton and Ordsall districts of central Salford are just one minutes' walk from the heart of Manchester's shopping and central business districts - just across the River Irwell which runs between the two cities.

Salford's closeness to Manchester city centre makes it an important part of the economy and culture that is driving England's north west forward. Salford and Manchester enjoy a unique situation: their connection creates a wealth of opportunities ranging from the potential for business relocation and development to establishing Salford's waterways and watersides as key regional and national visitor attractions and turning the city into a residential area of choice within Greater Manchester.

As one of the world's first industrial cities, Salford is flooded with historic achievements – including the world’s first free public library. Thanks to the 40 miles of the Duke of Bridgewater’s underground canals at The Delph, Worsley is heading towards UNESCO World Heritage status, but there is also 600 years of history packed into the haunted Tudor house; Ordsall Hall, whilst the people of Salford are celebrated in LifeTimes, an award-winning social history project based at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, To find out about the history of Salford Click Here
